Letter: What is patriotism?
Published: October 22, 2009
Have you noticed the terms “socialist” and “socialism” seems to have replaced “liberal” and “liberalism” when the radical right wants to hurl insults at those who disagree with them? I suppose these terms are the worst things they think they can say in public.
Is it possible for a socialist to be patriotic? How can we tell if one is patriotic? Some would say a patriot would want to recite the Pledge of Allegiance on a regular basis.
Interestingly, the Pledge was written by a socialist minister named Francis Bellamy in August 1892 and was first published in September 1892. It was used first during the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery in October 1892.
We often hear the term “patriotism.” What does it mean, and how can one tell if an individual is patriotic? Some say patriots always wear a flag lapel pin and fly the American flag in their yard. Some say serving in the military and voting are indications of patriotism.
At the start of World War II, many Americans were in deep poverty and there were very few flags. The only place I recall seeing one was at my school.
However, when they called for donations of rubber and metal, we responded. I took the tires off my wagon and tricycle and donated them. My parents gave each of their children a dime each week to buy savings stamps, which could eventually be traded for a bond.
In my opinion, there are not many highly visible signs of patriotism. Even serving in the military and voting do not in and of themselves qualify as an indicator. There are many reasons why people join the military and some may vote for entirely selfish reasons.
Flying (or wearing) the flag doesn’t make you patriotic any more than sleeping in a garage makes you a car. But, if you choose to fly the American flag, be sure it is in good condition or take it down and properly dispose of it.
It is better to display a “naked” flagpole than fly a flag that is torn or faded.

Dear bSir,
The Boston Massacre predated the Boston Tea Party.
The redcoats, pelted vby snowballs, rocks, and sticks thrown by an angry mob, reacted by opening fire and killing Crispus Attucks. By all accounts, he was our first martyr.
No less a patriot than Paul Revere yelled for blood.
Defending them was no less a patriot than President George Washington’s vice president, our second president and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, John Adams!
To make matters worse, John Adams was a Unitarian. So mwere JohnQuincy Adams and Millard Fillmore!
William Howard Taft, likewise, denied the divinity of Jesus.
I doubt that any of our founding fathers were Mormons because the Unchanging, WORD OF GOD had not yet been written!

Socialism and Communism are ideas that are incompatible with American Patriotism.
Was the Socialist Christian minister that wrote the Pledge of Allegiance a patriot?
Just curious.
Since there is all this talk about “socialism” lately and how our president MUST be a socialist/communist/Nazi/Muslim/America hater, I just wanted to be sure that all those terms were fully defined and understood.
I don’t think you all would know a communist or any other “ist” if he came up and slapped you in your ignorant faces…
Yes, a Socialist minister wrote the Pledge of Allegiance…don’t believe me? All you gotta do is “google” it.
Dear Sirs,
It was O(liver North, not Obama, who sold arms to Ahminejad’s mentor, Ayatollah Khomeni!
Was it patriotic to sell guns to the indians?
Significantly, Sgt. Kimberly Munley did not choose Oliver North, Newt Gingrich, Pat Buchanan, Chuck Norris nor any of their ilk for her first interview.
She chose Winfrey!
That should make it perfectly clear.

Carl Hess, I just want you to know that I greatly admire you and your courage in speaking truths here that no one else wants to hear, or believe.
Thank you.
You sir, are a true PATRIOT.
Hi Clifford,
My definition of American Patriotism was clearly stated. But put another way, one who protects and defends the Constitution is a Patriot.
Dear Sirs,
Abraham Lincoln’s patriotism was questioned when he introduced the Spot Resolutions against the Mexican War.
Ulysses Grant hated the politics that Polk played with the war.
Were those two American patriots or not?

You know Hitler could have been considered Patriotic to Germany, he loved his country. How about Mao and Stalin, were they Patriotic? I say Patriotism is something more than love of country. In America patriotism is not love of country, but loyality to the founding principles of individual liberty.
