Troy notes: Daniel Sheffield also sets record
Levi Brown wasn’t the only one to set a record in Troy’s 50-26 win over North Texas Saturday. Daniel Sheffield, a 6-foot-4 linebacker, blocked two extra points for his own school record.
“Just wanted to make plays for the mistakes I made (busted assignments on defense),” Sheffield said. “You’ve got to time it perfectly.”
Sheffield’s 36-inch vertical leap, which he said could be better, enabled him to get his hands on the kicks.
“It hurt a little bit, because it was cold out,” Sheffield said.
Sheffield almost had a safety in the third quarter. UNT was backed up to its 1-yard line, but defensive tackle Eugene Kinlaw got credit for tackling quarterback Nathan Tune in the end zone.
“I made first contact, but he’s just big enough to knock both of us over. I’m highly upset about that,” Sheffield said, laughing.
At that point, Kinlaw overheard.
“My safety, your safety, the whole team’s safety,” Kinlaw said.
Glusman misses third straight game
Senior kicker Sam Glusman missed his third straight game because of a lingering thigh injury.
Taylor hit field goals of 38 and 30 yards and hit all six extra points.
“Hopefully we can figure out what the problem is (with Glusman’s injury),” Blakeney said. “I expect him back pretty soon, but the other guy’s kicking pretty good. Maybe that’s motivation for him to get back out there pretty soon.”
Freshman linebacker/special teams star Kanorris Davis missed the game with a concussion. Right guard Steve Adams left with an ankle injury and didn’t return, but stayed in uniform. It was 34-7 when he got injured.
Woods gets first interception
It took four and a half years, but linebacker Bear Woods got his first career interception. The pick set up Troy’s final score of the first half, a field goal from Taylor that gave Troy a 34-7 lead at the half.
“I had about eight my senior year in high school. I was one of the top leaders in the state in interceptions, but just fell off,” Woods said. “(UNT quarterback Nathan Tune) knew right when he threw it. Right when I caught the ball, he was on top of me.
“I wish I could have gotten in the open, for one, to crush all the slow talk. I could have showed off the moves.”
His teammate and good friend Boris Lee, who has seven career interceptions but none this year, was standing nearby.
“Boris would have been tackled by the quarterback,” Woods said.
That’s when Lee offered his thoughts on Woods’ interception.
“The quarterback tackled him,” Lee said. “He did the spin move and he went down. The quarterback gets credit for the tackle.”
Lee has returned one touchdown for a score in his career.
“Everyone on the team was calling it a Boris Lee pick because it was thrown right to him,” Woods said. “I finally got lucky like Boris.
Lee meets special fan
This summer, Boris Lee got a message from Troy alum Eric Locklar with Locklar wearing his Boris Lee No. 2 jersey at the Coliseum in Rome. Locklar lives in Las Vegas.
Lee remembered Locklar when he saw him at the Trojan Walk before the game.
“That was an amazing feeling for someone way over there to be that big of a fan,” Lee said. “Especially my number, it was very, very exciting for me. I knew his face, but once he said, ‘Did you get my message?’ I knew it was him. We got a good win for him.”
