Oklahoma State trounces Troy

STILLWATER, Okla. — As good as it was for Troy to have last year’s win over Oklahoma State on national television, it was probably better that no one could see this year’s game unless they owned a ticket.

It was all OSU in Saturday’s rematch, and this one wasn’t nearly as close.

The Cowboys (4-0) rolled up 612 yards of offense in defeating the Trojans 55-24 at Boone Pickens Stadium. Troy fell to 2-2.

Oklahoma State held the ball for more than 40 minutes, while Troy’s time of possession was just 18:42.

On the night, OSU quarterback Zac Robinson threw for 254 yards on 16-of-21 passing, most of which came in the first half. All of receiver Dez Bryant’s six catches for 118 yards and three scores were in the first half, while Kendall Hunter ran for 155 yards and Keith Toston 114.

“I’d rate them at least a B,” cornerback Jorrick Calvin said. “We shot ourselves. (We took) a whooping, but we’ve got to work hard next week.”

Only a B? Really?

“They looked like an A today,” linebacker Boris Lee said. “They ran all over us and threw all over us. Take nothing away from Oklahoma State, they looked like an A today.”

Troy put up some respectable numbers on offense despite barely having the ball. Quarterback Jamie Hampton hit 24-of-45 for 253 yards and three touchdowns, but had two key interceptions. Jerrel Jernigan lost a fumble. OSU scored after all three turnovers.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” Troy running back DuJuan Harris said. “They showed they were the better team, period. There’s nothing else to say.”

OSU got the win in front of a school-record 52,463 fans.

“Home crowd might have something to do with it, but a game is a game,” Harris said. “We didn’t execute.

“It was our first real game where we got our butts kicked. We’ve got to rebound and try to finish strong.”

OSU was up just 14-0 after the first quarter, scoring on a 16-yard pass from Robinson to Bryant and on a 4-yard run by Hunter, but the Cowboys opened it up in the second quarter.

First, no one could cover Bryant, OSU’s sophomore sensation. Calvin tried and was burned on a 26-yard touchdown reception, putting OSU up 21-0.
Trevor Ford tried, but he bit on a pump fake from Robinson, who hit Bryant for a 44-yard touchdown. Tavares Williams pushed Bryant in the end zone, drawing a personal foul and giving OSU a 28-7 lead after Troy scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jamie Hampton to Austin Silvoy.
Sam Glusman boomed a 47-yard field goal with 51 seconds left in the first half, but that gave OSU enough time for one more scoring drive, as Hunter scored from 17 yards out to give OSU a 35-10 halftime lead.

Even when things looked good for Troy, they were bad. Will Goggans’ 68-yard punt was downed at the 1-yard line, but that just gave OSU a chance to pad its stats.

There, the Cowboys went 99 yards without passing once, taking 5:25 off the clock and going up 42-10 on Keith Toston’s 1-yard touchdown run.
After an OSU field goal, Hampton hit Fred Turner for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Troy had forced OSU to punt, but Matt Fodge ran 16 yards on a fake punt.

That set up a field goal, and a late interception set up OSU’s last score.

“They’ve got key skill at critical positions, I’d say every position on offense, especially their runners,” Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. “I don’t think we ever tackled one of them.”
