Brantley boys win without top player
Brantley didn’t have Tory Upshaw and sharpshooter Wesley Person was contained by New Brockton Tuesday night.
But Tevin Daniels picked up the slack for the Bulldogs.
Daniels knocked down eight 3-pointers and had a game-high 32 points to spark Brantley to a 63-54 win over the Gamecocks at the 3rd Annual Daleville Christmas Tournament.
With the win, the Class 1A fourth-ranked Bulldogs (7-0) advanced to tonight’s championship game at 7:30 p.m. against host Daleville.
The Warhawks (4-5) led nearly start to finish in downing Opp 52-46.
Opp and New Brockton play in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. Headland, which beat Geneva 86-72 on Tuesday, plays Samson in the fifth-place game.
Brantley played without Upshaw, who missed with a slight ankle injury. Meanwhile, Person, a night after scoring 26 against Headland, was limited to 10 points.
New Brockton was led by Shambray Johnson with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Farnon had 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Michael Haynes had 14 points.
Daleville 52, Opp 46: The Warhawks won their third straight game, holding off Opp for the third time this year.
Brandon Burks, Montez Flowers and Jacques Coleman led Daleville. Burks had 13 points and Flowers and Coleman 12 each. Gavin Free led Opp with 21 points.
Headland 86, Geneva 72: Headland coach George Bennett didn’t play his starters in the first quarter, but they made up for it in the final three quarters.
Geneva raced to an 20-2 lead on Ram reserves, but the Headland starters sparked a 32-point second quarter that pulled the Rams within three at halftime (37-34).
The game stayed tight into the final minutes. It was tied at 67 with just under five minutes left when Headland pulled away behind an 13-2 run.
Dishon McKay and Laboris Cushion had four points each in the spurt and Jeremy McKay added a 3-pointer.
For the game, Jahwon Williams led Headland with 22 points. Cushion had 18, Jeremy McKay 17 and Dishon McKay 16.
Jordan McIntyre led Geneva with 20 points.
Willie Williams had 18 and Deandre Dickens 10.
Brantley 76, Headland 73: On Monday night, Wesley Person had 26 points, Tory Upshaw 17 and Tevin Daniels 13 to lead the Bulldogs.
Jeremy McKay had 36 to pace Headland.
Dishon McKay had 15 and Jahwon Williams 10.
In other action Monday, Opp beat Samson 51-42 and New Brockton beat Geneva 71-53.
