Elba almost cracks state rankings

Last week’s 28-0 win over Cottonwood almost got Elba into the top 10 this week, but the Tigers fell a point short in voting by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

The Tigers (2-0) received 33 points in voting, just a point off No. 10 Lanett (34 points) in Class 2A.

No Wiregrass team moved into the rankings, but two teams fell out of the top 10 and three moved up a spot.

Overall, the area has seven teams in the top 10.

The two falling out were Geneva in Class 3A and Providence Christian in Class 1A. Both, though, are in the receiving votes category.
Geneva, No. 9 last week, received six points. Providence Christian, which has lost to two ranked teams, received one 10th-place vote among the 30 ballots.

The Eagles were 10th last week.

Moving up this week were Charles Henderson, Straughn and Pike Liberal Arts.

Charles Henderson inched up from sixth to fifth in Class 5A, Straughn from 10th to ninth in Class 3A and Pike Liberal Arts from sixth to fifth in AISA.
For the third consecutive poll, Eufaula stayed No. 1 in Class 5A despite two close wins.

Three other teams from the area stayed the same as last week — Pike County at No. 8 in Class 3A, Houston Academy at No. 4 in Class 2A and Ariton at No. 5 in Class 1A.

Five area teams, including Geneva, Elba and Providence Christian, are in receiving votes category. The other two are Daleville in Class 3A and New Brockton in Class 2A.

Six area teams failed to receive a vote after receiving at least one last week. The six were Enterprise (Class 6A), Carroll (5A), Andalusia (4A), Slocomb (3A), Cottonwood (2A) and Houston County (2A).

The seven leaders atop the Alabama Sports Writers Association stayed on top of their perches in this week’s high school football poll.
