Houston County stuns Cottonwood 52-50

COLUMBIA — Facing 3rd and 48 with two minutes left from its own 5-yard line, Houston County scored on a 95-yard touchdown pass from Desmond Warren to Jazeric Peterson as the Lions beat Cottonwood 52-50 in a thriller.

Cottonwood led 37-8 at halftime and 43-16 to start the fourth quarter. The Lions scored 44 in the second half.

For the Bears (1-2, 0-2), Andrew Cain threw for 137 yards, hitting 14-of-18 passes. He threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brett Moore and an 11-yard scoring pass to Keri Pender and Cain scored on a 1-yard run.

Moore ran for 145 yards on 15 carries and scored on a 40-yard run. Desmond Dubose ran for 81 yards and touchdowns of 4 and 2 yards. Jon Hayes had an interception return to the 1-yard line.

Slocomb 41, Wicksburg 22: The Juice was loose in Slocomb Friday, as Jermaine “Juicy” Williams ran for 19 times for 228 yards and six touchdowns. Williams scored on runs of 5, 24, 64, 7, 3 and 9 yards. Will Harper hit 4-of-6 passes for 77 yards. Defensively, Cruise Young had nine tackles and Zach Hughes had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.

Tallassee 20, Eufaula 17: No. 1 Eufaula was upset by Tallassee as Hunter Mullins hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired. For Eufaula (2-1, 1-1), Shaquille Ledbetter scored on a 5-yard run and Zack Brown threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Lazabian Jackson. Eufaula led 17-7 at one point before Tallassee’s Brian Sawyer ran a kickoff back 100 yards for a score.

Charles Henderson 34, Booker T. Washington 14: For CHHS (3-0, 2-0), Jawara White scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards, K.D. Edenfield scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Corey Dennis and Dennis entered as the backup quarterback and scored on a 44-yard run. Through three quarters, BTW had zero offensive first downs.

Elba 48, Barbour County 13: Freshman quarterback Michael Lindsey hit 10-of-14 passes for 145 yards and two scores and ran 13 times for 114 yards and two scores of 58 and 3 yards. Lindsey’s touchdown passes were 9 yards to Gavin Respress and 4 yards to Dylan McCollough.

Also for Elba (3-0, 2-0), Carlos Matias ran for 110 yards and touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards. Trey Belcher ran for a 10-yard touchdown. Richard Cooks hit 6-of-7 extra points.

Geneva County 27, Pleasant Home 0: Rico Reese threw for 122 yards and ran for 47 yards for the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-0) and Reggie Jones had 78 yards receiving. Reese ran for touchdowns of 2 and 5 yards and threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jones. Julian Ammons scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. Chris Lett had 13 tackles. It was Geneva County’s second straight shutout to open region play.

Abbeville Christian 47, SMCA 0: Shelby Watford ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns, one a 61-yarder, for ACA (1-2). Gabe Newman ran for 77 yards and a score and returned a punt 60 yards for a score. John Hewitt ran 74 yards and a score. Clay Herring and Chip White had interceptions, Dallas Sheffield had 10 tackles and Newman and Hewitt each had nine tackles.

Pike Liberal Arts 22, Fort Dale Academy 16: Pike Liberal’s Jerel Foster rushed for 143 yards on 19 carries and scored on runs of 44 and 56 yards to lead the fifth-ranked Patriots over No. 2 Fort Dale in a clash of undefeated teams in Class AAA. Trey Walters scored on a 65-yard quarterback keeper. Both teams recorded a safety in the game. Bradley Floyd had 44 yards receiving.

Pike Liberal finished with 323 yards of total offense and held the Eagles to 178 yards.

Pike improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in Region 1. Fort Dale fell 2-1, 1-1.

Opp 26, Alabama Christian 13: The Bobcats recorded four interceptions in the win.

Richard Davis ran for 106 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns, while Quadir Kincaid ran for 76 yards and a touchdown and Josh Scarborough scored a touchdown.

Samson 26, G.W. Long 14: For Samson, Cory Dean hit 9-of-11 passes for 188 yards and threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Deonte Williams. Brandon McCarter had a 63-yard punt return for a score.

Keith 41, Goshen 8: No stats were available.

Providence Christian 52, Kinston 8: No stats were reported for this game.

Geneva 20, Abbeville 19: Holten Bowdoin blocked an Abbeville extra point midway in the fourth quarter, preserving a Panther lead.

The Panthers raced out to a 20-6 lead in the second quarter. David Soles scored on a 28-yard run on 4th-and-9, Tavares McIntyre on a 13-yard run and Soles added an 19-yard run.

Abbeville scored once in the third and again midway in the fourth quarter, but had the extra point blocked on the second TD.

Valley 38, Carroll 7: A.J. Gissendanner scored the Eagles’ lone touchdown on a 10-yard run. Valley led 17-0 at halftime and pulled away in the second half.

Lanier County 34, Seminole County 14: Rodrigez Scott rushed for 90 yards and scored on runs of 6 and 3 yards for Seminole County.

Chris Brown led the Indians with 131 yards rushing on 13 carries. Scott also completed 4-of-7 passes for 50 yards.

Straughn 31, Cottage Hill 30: In Mobile, Straughn (3-0, 2-0) rallied from a 24-6 halftime deficit to earn the victory.

Ryne Taylor recovered a fumble, then on third-and-13 he hit Eric Samuel with a 68-yard screen pass with 3:27 left to play. Josh Dewrell kicked the PAT, and Tanner Lee blocked a 47-yard field goal attempt on the game’s final play to preserve the win.

Andrew Stokes scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter to give Straughn a 6-3 lead. But three second-quarter TD passes put Cottage Hill ahead 24-6 at halftime.

Stokes scored on a 1-yard run to cut the lead to 24-12, and Taylor hit Trey Bowen on a 7-yard scoring play to cut the lead to 24-18. Stokes then added another 10-yard run to tie it at 24.

Cottage Hill reclaimed the lead with 7:21 left, then forced a Straughn punt before fumbling with four minutes left to set up the heroics.

Pike County 26, Headland 7: At Headland, Quay Bailey returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown and caught a 53-yard pass for another score to lead the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-0). Bailey had three receptions for 132 yards.

Gerald Adams ran 12 times for 94 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown. Christopher Griffin added an 11-yard score.

For Headland (0-3, 0-2), Seth Crozier caught a 19-yard TD pass from Chase Peterson. Jontavius Moore led the Rams with 68 yards rushing. Drew Davis had eight tackles and two sacks.

Ashford 31, Bullock County 18: At Union Springs, Mike Ray ran for two touchdowns as Ashford (2-1, 1-1) knocked off Bullock County (1-1, 1-1).
Charlton Pope added a 2-yard touchdown run, Demichael Wigfall a 15-yard score and Jeremy McInnish kicked a field goal as well as all four PATs.
Jake Johnson, Brandon McCardle and Ray led the team on defense.

Beauregard 33, Rehobeth 14: At Rehobeth, Hunter Waldman and Cody Strickland each had 2-yard touchdown runs. Bunk Devane threw for 66 yards, and Strickland led Rehobeth (0-3, 0-2) with 86 yards rushing.

Beauregard led only 20-14 at halftime.

McKenzie 42, Ariton 28: At Ariton, Ariton rallied from a 27-14 halftime deficit to take a 28-27 lead, but McKenzie’s big plays ended Ariton’s chances.
Cole Harden went 10-for-28 for Ariton for 167 yards and a 70-yard TD pass to Craig Sanders and a TD pass to Jonathan Lampley. Harden also ran for a 7-yard touchdown. Drey Terry led Ariton with 91 yards rushing, 83 in the second half to get the Purple Cats back into the game.

Ariton (2-1, 1-1) appeared to be in position to tie the game in the fourth quarter when McKenzie’s punt returner fumbled the ball and an Ariton player scooped and scored. However, the play was ruled a muff, and the ball could not be advanced.

Lowndes Academy 42, Lakeside School 6: In Eufaula, Collins Henry led Lakeside with nine tackles and three assists, Blayne Sewell had six tackles and two assists and Chris Williams returned an interception roughly 60 yards for Lakeside’s only score. Lakeside fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in region play.
