Barbour bombs Bullock in Holiday Prep Classic

OZARK – Some high school basketball teams play on the perimeter. Some play around the rim and a few play above the rim.

Add the Barbour County Jaguars to that rare club.

Barbour County dunked and blocked its way to a 68-47 win over Bullock County in the quarterfinals of the Dothan Eagle/Dothan Progress/Southern Star Holiday Prep Classic, controlling the lane on offense and swatting away several Bullock attempts inside the lane on defense.

The Jaguars took control of the game with a 19-5 run to start the third quarter, turning a 21-17 halftime lead into a 40-22 advantage. From there, the Jaguars were never threatened.

“We got the lead and said at halftime that we wanted to add to the lead and play tough defense,” Barbour County head coach Raymond White said.

The Jaguars dominated by establishing 6-foot-4 center Devondrick Richardson inside. Barbour County worked the ball around the perimeter patiently and waited to find Richardson underneath the basket. He typically responded with a dunk, layup or drew a Bullock foul.

Bullock County attempted to deny Richardson the ball, but that freed up teammate Robert Lampley, who responded with 18 points.

Defensively, the Jaguars trapped Bullock County on the perimeter and forced numerous turnovers that resulted in easy Jaguar baskets. Meanwhile, Barbour County was able to protect the ball on offense.

“We’re so athletic that we have to learn how to control it,” White said. “If we throw a lob, we need to make sure it’s a good lob and finish.”

Overall, the Jaguars registered five dunks and eight blocked shots for the game. Bullock County turned the ball over 24 times.

Richardson led all scorers with 26 points. Courtavious Dorsey added 15.

Jonathan Anthony had 11 points to lead Bullock County. Brandon Rivers had nine.
