All of the playoff scenarios for regions involving Wiregrass Alabama High School Athletic Association teams crystallized last week, except for one.

Fueled by a tough semifinal loss last year, Providence Christian volleyball players make it clear what their objective is this week at the state tournament.

Another season. Another unbeaten record. Another state championship.

STRAUGHN — Straughn clinched the Class 3A, Region 1 title with a 28-6 win over Luverne as quarterback Josh Dewrell ran for 79 yards and a score and kicked four extra points.

The Providence Eagles fell to McKenzie 27-6 in their home finale, as McKenzie forced five turnovers and quarterback Emmanuel Johnson accounted for all four Tiger touchdowns.

Earlier this week, Dothan senior quarterback Jay LeGrand said he wanted to do something about the Tigers’ four-game losing streak to rival Northview. LeGrand and his Tiger teammates certainly did do something — emphatically, in fact.

ELBA — Houston County quarterback Desmond Warren lofted the pass into the end zone and a region championship, a home playoff date and a victory hung in the balance.

ABBEVILLE — After all the attention paid to the high-flying, spread-em-out offense displayed by Abbeville this season, the defense decided to take the spotlight Friday night and propel the team to a rivalry win and a playoff berth.

ASHFORD — It didn’t take Ashford head coach Chip Harris long to point to the turning point Friday night in Ashford’s 21-13 loss to region foe Alabama Christian. It came one minute into the second quarter. Alabama Christian led 7-0 on a clock-eating, 13-play drive in the first quarter.

The opportunistic Bulldogs benefited from five Daleville turnovers and dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football, clinching the region championship with a convincing 34-0 victory at home Friday night.

Houston Academy’s 21-12 win over G.W. Long wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty, but it had senior lineman Marco Pena smiling.

SEALE — Derrick Thomas scored on a 29-yard run with 1:14 to play in the game to lift Northview to a 10-6 win over Russell County on Friday night.

Behind a dominating second-half performance, Enterprise won its fourth straight game and third straight region contest Friday, beating Dothan 28-10 on a windy night at Rip Hewes Stadium.
