Hutchinson CC duo set for Troy (Two 2009 commitments)

June 03, 2008

Troy has picked up its first two known commitments for the 2009 signing class. Both signed with Troy in 2007 and plan to do so again in Feb. 2009.

Nate Newland

, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound offensive tackle, is from Frankfort, Ky., and signed with Troy in 2007 (though I don’t believe his name was released back then). He was short on his ACT so he signed with Hutchinson CC the same day. He said Tuesday night that he’ll resign with Troy and he hopes to finish his coursework at Hutch by December so he can enroll in Spring 2009.

Newland will be joined at Troy by

Eugene Kinlaw

, his friend at Hutchinson who also signed with Troy. Now, Kinlaw is a 6-foot-2, 310-pound defensive tackle who intends on returning to Troy in June 2009. Kinlaw is a Homerville, Ga., native.

Here is the online update of the two that I put on our web site. Read that for more information, including quotes, on the duo.

From the Hutch web site, here’s a bio of Kinlaw and here’s a bio of Newland.

Tuesday update

It’s old news now, but Omar Haugabook was released by the BC Lions over the weekend.

Cut and paste from a Vancouver Sun article, “He [Haugabook] was very productive in college and on film,“ Buono said. “But we had concerns about his [awkward] throwing action.“

Awkward or not, I’d take him over Zac Champion, the La. Tech guy who the Lions kept. It sounds like BC wasn’t the best place for Omar to start out at, so hopefully he can get another offer or two, if not as a quarterback than as a skill guy.

He’d fit in well in the Arena League also, but they’re more than halfway through this season.

Check back later - I anticipate having some more information on what signees are here. I’ll see some coaches tonight and tomorrow.
