My final story from the week-old Sun Belt Media Days, focusing on Sun Belt teams’ best chances to win out of conference.

Here’s something else I found on Oklahoma State, from Big 12 media days, thanks to the Tulsa World. Head coach Mike Gundy had an interesting comment on quarterback Zac Robinson, who returns for his junior season. He made his first start last year against Troy.

“There were only two players from what I understand that rushed for over 800 yards and threw for over 2800, and the other one won the Heisman Trophy. I think that sums up the season he had statistically.“

So Troy went 1-1 against the two (you should know the other one is UF’s Tim Tebow). Not bad.

The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette has a talking football with Wright Waters, the Sun Belt commish. The News-Star in Monroe addresses Sun Belt storylines.

Also, Leodis McKelvin is rich, well richer than he was at this point last year.

Know your Trojan: Xavier Lamb

July 26, 2008

By Drew Champlin

Lamb, a redshirt freshman, is currently listed as a backup middle linebacker

Why Troy?
A guy from my high school (Rick McGee) signed with Troy. As the season went on, I saw them play in the bowl game against Rice. They’ve got small linebackers, so I felt like I could fit in.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Hopefully I’ll be playing football somewhere.

Most memorable athletic moment?
In high school, my first game at Lincoln High School, I made the game-winning touchdown and made the game-saving tackle in overtime.

Most embarrassing athletic moment?
In the first round of the playoffs, the quarterback was the one who did the fake punt. He was lined up as the upback, and he burned me.

Something a lot of people don’t know about you
I wrestle. I had scholarships in high school from the Citadel and other small schools.

Who would play you in a movie?
Mike Epps

You play video games?
I play a lot of them on the PS2. I’m ready to play as Troy on the college football game.

Your welcome to college moment
The first day of workouts, we were supposed to run four gassers. I ran two and started throwing up.

Troy in the pros alert

By Drew Champlin

Interesting item on former cornerback Elbert Mack. That link has a quote and a picture of him in his Bucs gear.

Mack was undrafted after leading the country in interceptions last year, but signed a free agent deal with Tampa Bay.

Anyone else glad football is here?

First off, thanks Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge for tipping your pitches this weekend and blowing up my fantasy team’s ERA, WHIP and others.

Second of all, here’s my part 2 of my online-only Sun Belt notebook package from SBC Media Days. I knew this year I’d make sure I put the interviews to good use. This leads with Florida Atlantic, and has bits from North Texas, Western Kentucky and UL-Monroe. Part 1 of the notes was published yesterday.

So, for your viewing pleasure, here’s the Media Days package:
My Sun Belt predictions.
The Sun Belt pushing for a new bowl, among others.
Troy picked to finish second in the league.
Future football foe South Alabama getting serious
Finally, a feature on linebacker Boris Lee and what almost prevented him from having such a big year last year.

Emptying out the quotebook from the week’s trip to New Orleans.

The first part of my Sun Belt notes leads with Middle Tennessee and also focuses on Arkansas State, UL-Lafayette and FIU.

I’ll have some more Sun Belt coverage over the next couple of days.
