Coordinators talk ULM (plus Wed. links)

Both offensive coordinator Neal Brown and defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell had a lot to say about UL-Monroe, Saturday’s opponent.

“They probably worry me more than anybody else in the league because of the talent they seem to have every year,“ Rowell said. “They’ve got guys running around over there that are good football players. They always seem to have some great athletes and do a good job coaching them. Their scheme is a pain in the rear and they do some things scheme-wise that are advantageous for them and not so much for them. It slows us down a lot.“

QBs Revell, Wells bring similar traits: “They’re pretty similar,“ Rowell said. “I was very impressed with (Revell) last year, coming in during the situation he did. He made some great throws and made some great decisions pulling it and running the ball. He’s been a heck of a player the first part of the year for them. (Wells) comes in, they keep the reigns on him a little bit at the end of the Arkansas State game, but watching him in that Kentucky game, I don’t know who I’d rather have in the game. (Revell) is a little more mobile running it and they seem to do a few more things offensively, but not much. (Wells) made some great throws in the Kentucky game. He stood in the pocket and got hammered. Toughness and all the things you look for in a good quarterback, he has. I don’t know who I’d rather see out there.“

3-3-5 defense will present problems: Brown said that this week presents a unique week of preparation because of ULM’s style and skill on defense.

“We see a lot of 3-down (linemen) but we don’t see this type of defense so much,“ Brown said. “It’s unique. They do some non-traditional things out of it. It’s a little bit different preparation than your normal week. They got two really good d-linemen that are fast and can run on the edge (Aaron Morgan and Troy Evans). The kid, 9 (Morgan), got after Omar (Haugabook) and had several quarterback hurries here two years ago. They’ve got the (Cardia) Jackson kid who is a standout in the middle, a linebacker. Their secondary is all big. They play three safeties, one of them is the (James) Truxillo kid who has played in the league for a long time but was hurt last year. He’s a really good player. The other two safeties are 6-foot plus, 210-215 pound guys. They’re hitters and they can cover. The look they give you is very versatile. It’s a bunch of different looks out of the same combination of people.“

“Monroe, for whatever reason, we’re 2-1 against them, we’ve scored a decent amount of points on them but our yardage hasn’t been what it has. The last two years, they’ve been pretty standard as far as what they were doing. We didn’t play very well last year but we didn’t have all our bullets in our gun. They played better than us and they made the plays that we didn’t.“
