First day practice quick hits
July 30, 2008
Alright, was at practice but was also working upstairs on a story during practice, so I didn’t see everything. Maybe Taylor Bryan of the TroyTrojans.com blogosphere did. (Side note: my favorite blog from the Troy official web site is this one.
It’s funny, wideout Mykeal Terry suffered the first injury of camp and he was quick to let everyone know. Don’t worry, it was just a cut of the hand.
From what I could gather, the QBs looked decent early, but faltered late. On some 11-on-11 work I saw late, offensive coordinator Neal Brown had pulled backup Levi Brown (no relation) out. Starter Jamie Hampton was intercepted on back-to-back plays by Terence Moore and Chris Bowens. Good for the CBs, as Bowens made a pretty good play on a ball that wasn’t very well thrown, outjumping Fred Turner.
Dan Parker came in with the 3s and looked every bit like a freshman, but he showed some flashes.
“Dan Parker’s a fast joker,“ one onlooker said.
Now, I’m hoping the numbers I’m listing are right, because some defensive guys have the same numbers during practice. Parker led the 3s, and Brandon Boudreaux bulled past freshman Jacob Creech for a “sack” On the next play, Jacoby Thomas intercepted Parker and would have had a score. Bear in mind this was the third group.
Blakeney singled out, from what I can remember, corners Trevor Ford, Chris Bowens and Jorrick Calvin, punter Will Goggans, nickelback Terence Moore, both safeties Sherrod Martin and Tavares Williams. Of the freshmen, he had some good stuff to say about wideout Chip Reeves. Reeves is very fast and once he gets his technique down, he’s got a chance to be very good.
Wish I could be here for every practice, but I should be back for a full-padder next week.
