You’re on a date. She wants Chinese food. You want Japanese food.
In the past, this could have been trouble, but thanks to the recently opened Eurasia Cafe, dinner doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker.
Eurasia Cafe on West Main Street in Dothan offers a menu of both Chinese and Japanese food, both increasingly popular among the residents of the Circle City. Fusion restaurants are popping up all over the country, but Eurasia Cafe is the first of its kind here.
Manager Eric Lee explained it this way.
“We see a lot of Chinese and Japanese restaurants opening up — the Japanese restaurants especially on 231— and I guess they (the owners) just realized that there’s not a place where the customer can sit down and have both,” he said. “It’s basically more of a variety.”
I visited Eurasia Cafe on Monday for lunch. I was immediately impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant. The floor was well-vacuumed, the tables were all wiped clean and everything seemed to be in order. I was seated quickly and my order was taken shortly afterward.
The decor of the restaurant is basic, but there are various pictures and wall hangings that evoke an Oriental theme. I suspect as time goes on that the owners will decorate more.
I ordered a hibachi steak lunch ($9.95). The meat was excellent, cooked to medium rare exactly as I requested. I passed on the soup and salad, but I did eat the fried rice that came with the meal. The rice appears to be cooked like Chinese restaurant style fried rice, and I prefer the less sticky Japanese style, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The portion sizes were adequate for a lunch meal, but didn’t leave a sizable take home box.
My usual restaurant review companion was at home sick on the day of my visit, so I ordered another hibachi steak lunch and a California sushi roll ($4) to take home to her. She enjoyed the steak lunch and said she was pleasantly surprised by the sushi. She said rice is usually the make-or-break ingredient in sushi, and she praised Eurasia’s rice.
Service is very important to me when I visit a restaurant, and Eurasia did not disappoint. The wait staff was friendly, attentive and quick. My glass did not go empty, my sauce bowl stayed full and my mood remained happy throughout my visit. For a restaurant that’s only been open for about two weeks, Eurasia has a very competent front-of-the-house operation.
All in all, I give Eurasia Cafe a very favorable rating. The food is good, the service is excellent, and I like the fusion theme and wide variety of foods on the menu. Also, compared to other similar restaurants offering Chinese or Japanese fare, the prices at Eurasia are very reasonable.
