Eye Center South provides free cataract surgeries each year to visually impaired people who would otherwise go untreated due to lack of insurance or other financial constraints. Drs. William L. Bennett and Marnix E. Heersink will perform the surgeries on Wiregrass patients who qualify for this Gift of Sight program.
Deadline to qualify is Friday, April 24.
Potential patients may call to see if they qualify. Many are referred from participating optometrists who provide free post-op care. Eye Center South’s work is part of a nationwide program known as Mission Cataract USA, a national program created in 1991 to bring eye doctors, surgeons and volunteers together to provide free vision services to those in need. Heersink first introduced the program to the Wiregrass in 1992, after which Bennett joined him.
Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of vision loss, but can be safely removed with a brief, painless surgery, and with a very high success rate of restoring vision. Cataracts usually develop due to age, but also for other reasons such as diabetes, injuries, some medications, or heredity.
