For more than 30 years, the Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood has hosted a fine art auction.
And once again the social hall of Temple Emanu-El will be filled with roughly 200 pieces of art to be auctioned off. The Annual Art Auction is set for Saturday, Jan. 24, with a second chance to purchase art on Sunday, Jan. 25. The auction will be conducted by State of the Art, a company out of Tennessee that provides art for auctions around the country and specializes in art auctions as fundraisers.
“It’s a fundraising event, and a portion of the ticket proceeds go to charities our sisterhood has voted to support that year,” member Kay Podem said.
Charities and organizations that have received money in the past include the House of Ruth, Landmark Park and the Houston-Love Memorial Library. Podem said the sisterhood — a women’s group affiliated with Temple Emanu-El — will likely vote in April on what organizations will receive funds this year.
Pieces to be auctioned will include art by Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Norman Rockwell, LeRoy Neiman, Pablo Picasso and Jim Buckels. An auctioneer with State of the Art will explain the mediums behind the art.
Buckels will make an appearance on Sunday during a “take a second look” sale to autograph any Buckels purchase made at the auction on Saturday or during the Sunday sale. This is the first time the auction has had a featured artist on hand.
And Podem said the good cause also proves to be a good time for those who attend. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres will be served during the auction preview beginning at 6 p.m. The Sunday event will feature coffee and bagels.
“People have a good time visiting and socializing,” she said. “... I just think it’s a fun evening.”
