Sarah-Ann McGilvray wanted to sell at least 800 boxes of Girl Scout cookies last year. She sold 901 boxes.
Her goal this year? An even 1,000 boxes.
“I like going to meet new people,” 9-year-old Sarah-Ann said.
Girl Scout cookie sales began Tuesday. Booth sales will start Feb. 12, and the last day of cookie sales will be March 14. Cookies are $3.50 per box.
Last year, Sarah-Ann gave out samples of Dulce de Leches to sell cookies, and this year she’s already planning a lemonade stand to sell cookies and lemonade. The Providence Christian School third-grader has been selling cookies for four years. And she’ll be among the girls in her troop who will be selling their shares of Thin Mints, Somoas, Do-Si-Dos, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Lemon Chalet Cremes and the newest variety, Thank U Berry Much, made with sweetened dried cranberries.
“She’s a salesperson; she pushes me,” said Tracey McGilvray, Sarah-Ann’s mother. “ ... She loves to do booths. I think the trick to the sale are the blue eyes and blond hair.”
Girl Scouts started selling cookies as early as 1917 — five years after Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouts of the USA in Savannah, Ga. Today the organization has 2.4 million girl members and 900,000 adult members.
Proceeds from cookie sales are used locally. Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama serves more than 12,000 girl and adult members and consists of 30 counties in southern Alabama, including the eight Wiregrass counties. Local proceeds go toward sending girls to a summer resident camp as well as programs and volunteer training.
Tracey McGilvray was a Girl Scout, making it all the way to cadet status. She even has a shoebox filled with her Girl Scout badges, including a 1975 badge that features a kangaroo on a unicycle. Her mother was a “cookie mom,” and now she’s happy to do it for her daughter.
“I loved Girl Scouts myself,” McGilvray said. “It teaches a lot of good morals and life skills. It really brings their self esteem up and teaches them to handle life without being brought down.”
