A Georgia man recently pleaded guilty to the death of his former girlfriend during an alcohol-related crash in Henry County.
Henry County District Attorney Doug Valeska said Micah Perry Davis, 21, of Albany, Ga., received a 25-year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty Monday in Henry County Circuit Court in front of Judge Derek Peterson.
According to court records, Davis was originally arrested and charged with murder and two felony counts of second-degree assault. Valeska said as part of an agreement, Davis pleaded guilty to manslaughter along with both assault charges.
Davis pleaded guilty to the death of Ashley Nicole Griffin. Both Davis and Griffin were 19 at the time of the crash. The single-vehicle crash happened on Nov. 9, 2006, after Davis lost control of the Toyota he was driving in the eastbound lane of Strickland Road near Henry County Road 13.
“He had been drinking earlier and of course he’s under age,” Valeska said. “He was going in excess of 100 mph and then he lost control, the vehicle rolled and wrecked.”
Valeska said the posted speed limit where the crash happened was 40 mph. He said Davis pleaded guilty to assaulting Ashley Griffin’s sister, Tyece Griffin, 22, and a friend, Shalonda Brooks, 18. Valeska said Davis’ 4-month-old son, Micah Perry Davis Jr., was also in the car but he did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
He said Davis received a 20-year prison sentence for the manslaughter guilty plea, and five years for each of the assaults, which were to run concurrently with each other and consecutively to the manslaughter sentence.
The Headland Police Department and Alabama State Troopers investigated the crash. Valeska said Davis wasn’t officially arrested on the charges until May 2008 because he’d fled to Germany on the original charges filed after the crash.
“Once again, because of speed and alcohol a young girl loses her life,” Valeska said. “It’s real simple, alcohol and speed kill.”
