A medical condition may have caused an elderly woman to crash her car through the front entrance of the Salvation Army store on South Oates Street Thursday.

The driver — identified by police as Winnie Chandler of Jakin, Ga. — and a patron in the store suffered minor to moderate injuries and were transported by ambulance to a local hospital, according to David Hasty of the Dothan Fire Department. No other details were given.

The woman’s 2001 Ford Escort was parked directly in front of the entrance around 10:40 a.m. when the accident occurred. The front door and an accompanying glass window were destroyed when about one quarter of the car wound up inside the store.

It marks at least the second time a vehicle has struck the building. About five years ago, a semi truck’s brakes failed and rolled across South Oates Street into the side of the building, according to the building owner.
