Time Warner Cable officials have confirmed an ongoing investigation in Midland City that likely involves more than 80 residents and $30,000 in cable theft.
According to Time Warner, a total of 83 Midland City residents are being investigated as to whether or not they stole cable services over a three-year period, which has amounted to at least $30,019.50.
No warrants have been obtained for any arrests in relation to the case.
Midland City Police Investigator John Greene said the department was notified of suspected theft in October after a Time Warner audit of its services throughout the Wiregrass.
Time Warner spokeswoman Ann Shrewsbury said the entire investigation is now being handled by local law enforcement.
An internal investigations team regularly monitors cable services and provides local law enforcement with information of any violations, she said.
“We do take the theft of services very seriously, and we want to make sure that our paying customers don’t have their service interrupted because of a non-paying person,” Shrewsbury said.
According to Time Warner, it is the second-largest cable operator in the U.S. with more than 14 million customers and 47,000 employees.
It provides cable services in Dothan, Rehobeth, Pinckard, Daleville, Enterprise, Midland City, Fort Rucker and Level Plains, according to the local office.
Greene, who said he was fired from Midland City in November because he was a probationary employee, said he intends to continue the investigation in his capacity as a law enforcement officer before forwarding the case to the Dale County District Attorney’s Office.
Greene currently serves with the Newton Police Department.
It was not clear whether the Midland City Police Department would initiate a separate investigation apart from Greene’s.
