Elections are on Tuesday, July 14
The slate of candidates for the upcoming municipal elections was officially set Tuesday with qualifying ending at 5 p.m., but City Clerk Pam McCoy and her staff stayed late going through candidates’ paperwork turned in at the last minute.
One candidate, Sidney Miller Jr., failed to complete his paperwork on time. Miller, who was seeking the mayor’s seat, did not return his petition with 100 verifiable names.
In all, 19 candidates are on this year’s ballot, vying for eight offices. Up for re-election this year is the mayor and the school board chairman, along with city and school board representatives from Districts 1, 3, and 5.
The most sought-after seat on the commission is District 1, located in the north to northeastern part of the city, where five candidates are running for office. Two are running for mayor and District 3 commissioner, while three are seeking the District 5 seat.
In the school board race, only two of four candidates face opposition. Three are running for school board chairman and two seek the office being vacated in District 3.
The District 1 incumbent and a newcomer in District 5 are the only candidates to qualify for their respective offices.
The candidates are:
Mayor’s race: Car dealer Mike Schmitz and District 6 Commissioner Keith Seagle.
City Commission, District 1: Larry Matthews, Kevin Dorsey, James Reading, Earnest C. Rhodes, and George Williams Jr.
City Commission, District 3: Kenneth Everett and Paul Lee.
City Commission, District 5: Taylor Barbaree, Paul Ferrell, and David Cornelius.
School Board Chairman: Harry Wayne Parrish, Gayla White and Barry Farmer.
School Board, District 1: Brenda Guilford
School Board, District 3: Terry L. Laseter and Charles Woodall
School Board, District 5: Ben Armstrong.

In the school board races, only the incumbent in District 1 is seeking re-election. Chairman Steve Stokes and District 5 member Hayes McKay are not seeking another term. The District 3 incumbent is running for school board chairman.
