Monday’s Dothan City School Board meeting left one phrase on the tongue of Dr. Sam Nichols -- Yes We Can.
Dothan Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker and city schools director of secondary curriculum Allyson Allyson Morgan presented the board with a detailed, written phase one for the Yes We Can Dothan co-owned strategic plan Monday night, and board representatives said they liked what they saw.
“I’ve never seen this many people at a board meeting in six and a half years wihout some controversial issue,” said board member Jimmy Addison. “People from all over the community are supporting this.”
According to Morgan and Parker, the plan comes down to five basic goals: gruduation for all, improved communications, high expectations and accountability, increased parental responsibility and funding better schools to make a better Dothan.
Dothan City Schools Superintendent Dr. Sam Nichols expects the board to vote on the plan as soon as its next meeting, and he’s confident the plan will be as supported by the board as it has been by the community.
“This is the one opportunity we've had in the school system to really partner with the community,” Nichols said of the plan, which involves equal participation from the school system and the community as a whole. “We're excited about it. It's going to be my wholehearted recommendation to the school board that we adopt the plan and move forward with the effort.”
Parker emphasized the joint effort between the schools and the city’s residents.
“If you weren’t involved in it, you missed out, but it’s not too late. We need your help,” Parker said. “Our system will be strong because we, as citizens of Dothan, are united and focused on one common vision for our school system.”
