OZARK -- Martha Faulk hoped to reach and out touch someone with her words Monday afternoon.
Faulk read a few words from the book of 1 Kings as part of a Bible reading marathon outside the Dale County Courthouse in downtown Ozark. The marathon kicked off Sunday afternoon and will wind down Thursday at noon to coincide with the National Day of Prayer celebration.
“It’s rewarding to speak God’s word and share it with others,” Faulk said. “If you could just reach one person, change one person’s life, then it’s worth it.”
Annette Keller came to the reading for the second time in two days. She visited Sunday with the youth group from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
“We ring the bell on Thursday to get everybody’s attention,” Keller said. “The last two years I rung the bell. It was awesome. I know I’m doing it for somebody special, his name is Jesus.”
Keller read for 15 minutes from the book of 1 Kings in the Old Testament. Keller encouraged anyone to come and read a few verses.
“I can’t pronounce all the words, but I just do the best I can and that’s all God asks of us.”
Bill Hart, the pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, said the church started the marathon about five years ago. He said they have plenty of spots left open over the next two days to read. He said the last two years they finished the Bible early and started over reading the New Testament a second time.
“I just signed one up,” Hart said as he walked up and down the sidewalk of the courthouse. “The mayor is going to read Wednesday at 10 o’clock.”
