Sometime in the early spring, the county will begin resurfacing a 2-mile stretch of Brannon Stand Road, from Highway 52 to north of Fortner Street, as part of a 100 percent stimulus-funded project.
The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act is providing funding, with the money being channeled through the Metropolitan Planning Organization. Both the city and county are receiving some of the $2.1 million stimulus award.
Houston County Engineer Mark Pool said it is the last stretch of this popular Dothan bypass to be resurfaced.
“I call it the secret I-10 connector,” Pool said, referring to the road, which bypasses Dothan to the west, from Midland City on U.S. 231 North to near the state line on U.S. 231 South.
Brannon Stand also serves as a daily commuting access road for many of those living in subdivisions west of Dothan and has been part of past I-10 connector plans which have gone stagnant due to a lack of funding.
“This is a federal project because of the stimulus funds, so it has to go through the Alabama Department of Transportation,” Pool said. “It could be let in November and we probably won’t start on it until April.”
The estimated cost of construction for the 2.15-mile section of road is $317,740.
“Those of you who have ridden on this section of Brannon Stand know this is very much needed,” said Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver.
The county is also using $328,590 in stimulus funds to resurface 2.1 miles of Jordan Avenue, from U.S. 84 East to Glenn Lawrence Road.
