Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 29-year-old Webb man on Tuesday.
Houston County Sheriff’s deputies, along with the Houston County coroner, responded to the 6100 block of Old Webb Road on Tuesday evening after the apparent drowning of James Edward Herring II.
Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said Herring initially appeared to have drowned in the half acre pond near a Spectracare facility in Webb.
“He’d been dead at least 18 hours, and they found him in the water,” Byrd said.
Byrd said an official of cause of death would not be determined until an autopsy on Herring is completed at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Byrd said Herring apparently lived in a group home near the pond, and had left two days prior to him being found to go visit some family. Byrd said the coroner’s office was called to the scene around 4:30 p.m.
Houston County Sheriff’s Capt. Antonio Gonzalez said deputies have started an investigation into Herring’s death. Gonzalez said it’s unclear how Herring wound up in the pond. Gonzalez said no official determination on whether foul play was involved in Herring’s death has been made.
“We won’t make any statement or ruling until we know for sure,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said Herring had no substantial injuries to his body, and was fully clothed when he was found in the pond.
Herring became the second Wiregrass resident to reportedly drown within the past week.
An Enterprise teen, Stephen Bush, drowned over the holiday weekend in the Choctawhatchee River.
