Hungry for a traditional deli-style corned beef sandwich on rye? If you are, the members of Temple Emanu-El have a tantalizing offer just for you. You can satisfy your hunger and help the community at the same time.
Temple Emanu-El, 188 N. Park Avenue in Dothan, will hold its annual Deli Day Thursday, April 29, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Pre-orders are requested and can be made by calling Temple Emanu-El, 792-5001, or Georgia Solomon, 792-9363. They can placed by email at dothantemple@graceba.net or faxed to 793-0033. Orders of eight or more can be delivered. Orders should be placed no later than April 23.
The cost for the bag lunch is $10 and includes a quarter-pound, deli-style corned beef sandwich on Atlanta Bread Company Jewish rye bread, a kosher dill pickle, a bag of chips, spicy brown Grey Poupon mustard and an ABC chocolate chip cookie.
Deli Day organizers have set a goal of 1,200 sandwiches.
“This is truly a labor of love,” said Georgia Solomon, a member of the Deli Day committee, as she discussed how the membership of the Temple works together to make the event a success. “We have a multitude of people who are helping, either by preparing the sandwiches, packing the bags, making phone calls. We have a lot of people involved in all of those behind-the-scenes tasks that need to be done.
“We’re able to offer delivery service on Deli Day, because we have members who are willing to be runners.”
Those who purchase the corned beef sandwich bag lunch are invited to spend their lunch hour, if possible, at the Temple.
“While we offer free delivery and carry-out, we also encourage people to dine in with us,” Mrs. Solomon said. “We will have drinks available for purchase.”
The committee is led by Robert Goldsmith. Serving with him are Laura Blumberg, Richard Blumberg and Mrs. Solomon.
This year, the Temple members have received some additional help in preparing the picnic pack that goes with the corned beef sandwich.
“The John Conti Work Center at the Vaughn-Blumberg Center helped in preparing the picnic packs this year,” Mrs. Solomon said. “And they did a wonderful job for us.”
Proceeds from Deli Day allow Temple Emanu-El to fund numerous community programs that are open to the public.
“Deli Day allows us to take care of Temple needs,” Mrs. Solomon noted. “It allows us to have a vibrant Jewish community. It also allows us to use other outlets (art auction, etc.) to provide funds for charitable organizations.
“Funds from Deli Day allow us to offer programs and concerts that are open to the community. It also allows us to help service personnel that come through the area.”
