Columbia stabbing suspect on probation for prior stabbing

The man facing an attempted murder charge for a recent stabbing in Columbia is now also charged with using a woman’s cell phone to beat her in the face.

Columbia Police Chief Warren Floyd charged Robert Franklin Shoemaker earlier this week with repeatedly stabbing a man in the chest and side of his body. Shoemaker was charged with attempted murder and remains held in the Houston County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Court records show Houston County Sheriff’s deputies also served a misdemeanor warrant against Shoemaker, charging him with domestic violence harassment. According to the warrant, Shoemaker was charged with assaulting a woman on the same day the stabbing happened in Columbia. The warrant said Shoemaker was charged with grabbing the victim and throwing her to the floor where he began punching her repeatedly in the face with a cell phone.

It’s unclear whether the domestic incident and stabbing that happened on Saturday, Aug. 14 are related.

Floyd said he arrested Shoemaker at the location of the stabbing, which was near the intersection of Main and Church streets. The warrant for Shoemaker’s arrest said he used a folding-style pocket knife in the stabbing.

It’s not the first time Shoemaker has faced an assault charge for a stabbing.

Capt. Will Caudill of the Early County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia said Shoemaker was charged with felony aggravated assault and felony aggravated battery from a stabbing in December 2007. He said Shoemaker later received 20 years probation for that assault.

Jerry Tiner of Blakely, Ga., remembers receiving nearly 100 stitches from the assault he said he suffered at the hands of Shoemaker. According to the Early County Sheriff’s report, Tiner also suffered a punctured lung and cut intestine after he was stabbed in the back and in the stomach.

“I was at a friend’s house, and he stabbed me in my back eight times while I was trying to get away,” Tiner said.
