Former Highlands Elementary School principal Vernell Paul has died.
Dothan City School Superintendent Sam Nichols confirmed the death, which he said occurred this weekend. Nichols said Paul had complained of a headache Friday, went to the hospital, later lost consciousness and did not recover.
Paul, a 30-year veteran of the city school system, had served as principal of Grandview Elementary School and Highlands Elementary. She had only been retired about a year.
"It's not supposed to be that way," Nichols said.
Nichols described Paul as a dedicated educator who always put her students first. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
