GENEVA COUNTY - A simple traffic stop turned into a two-county chase Monday afternoon, and law enforcement officers say they still haven’t found the man they chased.
According to Houston County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Donald Valenza, a deputy tried to pull over a Ford Mustang at about 3:20 p.m. Monday, but the driver proceeded to lead deputies on a chase into Geneva County, with speeds reaching 110 mph on county dirt roads.
The vehicle chase finally ended on Union Hill Road in Geneva County, between Slocomb and Hartford, when a deputy executed a P.I.T. maneuver that wrecked the man’s car.
At that point, the man ran from the Mustang into a wooded area.
“We tried to set up a perimeter, but before we could get a helicopter, we feel like he may have breached the perimeter,” Valenza said.
Officers from around Houston and Geneva counties assisted in the pursuit and setting up the perimeter.
After searching the man’s vehicle, officers discovered about two to three grams of methamphetamine, according to Houston County Sheriff’s Capt. Antonio Gonzalez.
Valenza said the manhunt was called off Monday night, but authorities believe they know the man’s identity. Because it could not be confirmed, no name was released Monday night.
