A 56-year-old Dothan man is behind bars after police detectives arrested him on charges he tried to stab another man to death at the House of Benjamin over the weekend.
Dothan Police Capt. Steve Parrish said officers arrested Joseph A. Urgent a few blocks away from the scene of the crime in the 200 block of South College Street. Parrish said Urgent was charged with stabbing a 57-year-old man multiple times. Parrish said the man was taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center for treatment to wounds to his chest, arm and hand.
Dothan police detectives charged the 56-year-old Urgent with felony attempted murder. According to Dothan City Jail records, Urgent lived at the House of Benjamin where police said the stabbing happened about 7 p.m. Saturday.
The House of Benjamin Executive Director Earl C. Jones said the facility is a home for veterans in a transition in their lives. Jones declined to say anything about what happened during the assault at the veterans facility.
Police told an Eagle reporter the assault stemmed from a dispute over food at the facility. Police said the victim likely suffered some injuries trying to defend himself.
Urgent faces 10 to 99 years or life in prison if convicted of the class A felony attempted murder.
