After Judge Rose Evans Gordon swung her gavel Tuesday, it was official: Faine Elementary School had been officially adopted.
Faine and two other schools — Carver Magnet and Hidden Lake Elementary — had adoption ceremonies Tuesday as part of the adopt-a-school program. The program partners local businesses and individuals with schools to help foster community support for local education. About 80 organizations are adopting schools.
Speaking at Faine’s event, Gordon said the program was a great way for the community to support education.
Support can come in the form of participation and material goods. Covenant United Methodist Church gave students at Faine backpacks filled with supplies at the beginning of the year.
“We want you to be as beautiful, successful and intelligent as you were created to be,” Mike Hoppe, a pastor at Covenant said.
The adopt-a-school program has been around for about two decades but has recently received increased support from the Yes We Can! Dothan education advocacy group.
Micah Rodgers, 9, is a student at Faine and said he was happy that area businesses and organizations are taking an interest in his school.
“It’s an awesome program because it lets students know somebody is always watching them, and lets them know that they’re okay and that somebody cares about their education.”
