Call it “Cash for Cleats.”
A local sporting goods equipment exchange is hosting an event where it will take local residents’ old athletic equipment and give the Dothan City Schools the cash value of their goods. The money will be placed in a fund to replace old exercise and fitness equipment, upgrade playgrounds and support athletic programs in the Dothan City Schools.
Lavonda Gosselin, Girard Middle School PTO president, said on Saturday, Jan. 23, the "Adopt-A-School! Dothan" program will partner with Play It Again Sports to buy residents’ gently used sports equipment. The event will be held at the old Circle West Cinemas from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Gosselin said the recent budgetary problems schools around Alabama are facing are preventing many schools from upgrading and improving playground equipment.
“The older elementary schools haven’t had money to replace equipment, some have repainted and repaired equipment, but they haven’t had new equipment in a long time,” she said. “The newer schools haven’t had money for mulch or money to pay people to do the mulching.”
Twyla Williams, a spokesperson for the Yes We Can! Dothan education advocacy group, said providing schools with proper exercise and playground equipment is important to students’ health.
“I think obesity is a big thing right now,” she said.
Eric Headley, general manager of Play It Again Sports’ Dothan store, said he is happy to be able to support local schools’ efforts to provide better playground and athletic equipment.
Play It Again has about 400 locations scattered throughout the United States.
