Two teenagers face the possibility of life in prison after police charged them with setting fire to the occupied boys home where they live in Dothan.
Court records show police detectives charged both Samuel Lovitt, 16, and Steven Paige, 17, with first-degree arson for setting fire to Big Brother's Home Away from Home residence in the 100 block of North Bell Street on Sunday. Both teenagers face 10 to 99 years or life in prison if convicted of the class A felony, first-degree arson.
Dothan Police Capt. Steve Parrish said a 15-year-old boy was also charged with the same crime, but will not be charged as an adult. He said the investigation showed the 15-year-old boy apparently set fire to some clothes inside a closet and shut the door. He said the other two teenagers were also charged because they knew about the fire.
Parrish said one of the staff members of the boys home discovered smoke from the fire and called 911. He said no one was injured in the fire. He said the fire was put out very quickly, and less than 10 people were inside the home at the time of the fire.
“It was just extensive damage to the closet,” Parrish said.
Parrish said firefighters with the Dothan Fire Department responded to the fire around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. He said the teenagers charged with arson were living in the home as part of an in-house detention with the Department of Youth Services.
The 16-year-old and 17-year-old boys were each taken to the Dothan City Jail, where they would later be taken to the Houston County Jail and held on a $10,000 bond each. The 15-year-old boy was taken to the Southeast Alabama Juvenile Diversion Center.
