After about eight years in elementary school, Todd Weeks thinks he’s ready to move up to middle school.
Weeks is the new principal of Beverlye Magnet School. He’s taking over for former principal Larry Norris, who recently retired. Weeks said he is excited to be taking the reins at Beverlye because of its strong parental support and its many extracurricular programs.
Weeks formerly served as principal of Grandview Elementary School from 2002-2008, and previously was an assistant principal at Beverlye. Weeks said a key difference in running an elementary school and a middle school is that discipline is more cut-and-dried.
“There are less gray areas,” he said. “They’re old enough to know right from wrong and what’s expected from them behaviorally and academically.”
Weeks said he will likely spend his first year at Beverlye sizing the school up, finding out what works and what doesn’t, and making minor tweaks.
Weeks said he intends to carry on Beverlye’s reputation for being an innovative school, continuing Norris’ work of frequently trying new programs and teaching methods.
“The exciting thing about he magnet school is that you have the opportunity to think out of the box here,” he said.
Weeks admits that the funding situation will have an impact on Beverlye, but said federal Title I funds help soften some of the impacts of proration.
Weeks has worked for the Dothan City Schools for 20 years. He holds a master’s degree from Troy University and two bachelor degrees from Troy as well.
