Tamika Fleming learned many of the skills she’ll use as a principal back when she was in elementary school herself.
Being a good listener. Teamwork. Organization. All important skills for a leader, and all skills Fleming hopes to pass on to her students at Grandview Elementary School.
Fleming is taking over for Todd Weeks, who became principal of Beverlye Magnet School.
“I am truly blessed for this opportunity,” she said.
Grandview has received aid from the FACES program, a Wiregrass Foundation-sponsored program that provides enrichment activities for students at Grandview and Faine, the system’s two highest poverty schools. Fleming said she hopes to continue integration of FACES concepts into her school to improve student performance, parental involvement and the general atmosphere of the school.
Fleming said the FACES programs, which include arts and after school activities, have had big results in student achievement and behavior.
Fleming hopes to provide a structured and nurturing environment for her students.
“Our children need more mentoring and lots of love,” she said. “We have to be very supportive of the families.”
Fleming said she has a great staff to build with, and a good record left by Weeks to build upon.
“We want to continue what we’re doing and do it a little better,” she said.
Fleming has a master’s degree in educational leadership, and a bachelor’s degree in education, both from Troy University.
