Republican Candidate Lamar Brooks has conceded in the House District 87 race, allowing Donald Chesteen to go into November as the Republican party’s candidate, according to officials.
The Alabama Republican Party issued a statement on Friday that said Brooks felt it was in the best interest of the party to avoid a potentially divisive runoff with Chesteen.
Differing vote totals between the Republican Party and the Houston and Geneva County probate offices left questions on whether the two would be in the July 13 runoff before one of them went on to face Democratic Nominee Vickie Moore in November.
The Republican Party had said Chesteen carried less than 50 percent of the vote on Tuesday, which would have required a runoff.
The probate judges’ offices said Chesteen had 53 percent, which would not have required a runoff.
