A former Headland police officer arrested recently on a felony drug charge will have to serve two years behind bars after a judge revoked his probation on Monday for an earlier criminal case.
Henry County District Attorney Doug Valeska said Circuit Court Judge Kevin Moulton revoked the probation for Jason Carey Hughes and ordered him to serve 24 months in the Henry County Jail.
Hughes, 39, of Henry County Road 53, Abbeville, pleaded guilty in October 2009 to two misdemeanor charges of misusing confidential law enforcement information.
“It was the illegal use of the NCIC computer, the national crime information center and they made a determination he was using it for non law enforcement purposes,” Valeska said.
Valeska said Hughes was originally given 12 months in jail for each misdemeanor, but those sentences were suspended for one year probation to be served consecutively with each other. The offenses happened in September 2008 while Hughes worked as an officer at the Headland Police Department. Hughes had also previously worked for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.
A probation revocation was filed last month after Henry County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Hughes on a felony drug distribution charge. Valeska said the distribution of drugs allegations stem from a custody dispute.
Valeska said a Henry County sheriff’s narcotics detective testified Monday in court, during which he played a tape recording of Hughes admitting to planting pills behind a license plate of another person’s vehicle. Valeska said Hughes is charged with the distribution of 13 prescription medication pills, which he referred to as controlled substances.
“The bad part was this was a former police officer who set up some innocent people,” Valeska said. “He reported it, planted it and then gets caught. We’ll prosecute for him for the distribution case.”
