A four-wheeler crash Wednesday night in Geneva County killed a Hartford man and injured another. Mason Joel Walding, 24, of Hartford and Nathaniel Brock Rainey, 27, of Hartford were traveling on a 2007 Honda Rancher when they crashed.
A statement from Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams said Walding had served as a firefighter in Dothan for about two and half years. He was most recently assigned to the “A-Shift”, Battalion 1 where he was assigned to Engine 1.
Fire Capt. Chris Etheredge said Walding was assigned as a firefighter in the downtown area.
The initial investigation indicates that Walding was traveling on Millville Road over the posted speed limit when he lost control and crashed in a field. Walding and Rainey, who were not wearing helmets, were both ejected off the four-wheeler. Walding was pronounced dead at the scene by Geneva County Coroner Max Motley. Rainey was transported to Flowers hospital by Hartford Rescue where he was treated for his injuries.
The crash occurred at 11:10 p.m. six miles south of Hartford. State Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Funeral services for Walding will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sardis Methodist Church, located on Geneva County Road 67. Visitation will be at the church from 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
