A Headland woman testified in court Tuesday about how she covered her face with her hands and arms as a man attacked her during a robbery.
The woman recalled several details during the sentencing hearing for 20-year-old Demond Jackson, who assaulted the woman and her friend. She said Jackson grabbed both her and her friend, punched them and threw them to the ground. She also said he cut her several times during the assault on the face and leg.
"I know he needs some help with his anger because I didn't do anything to him," the woman said.
Circuit Court Judge Brad Mendheim sentenced Jackson to serve a 25-year prison sentence for each of the robbery cases, and a 10-year prison sentence for each of the other three charges, which he said would all run concurrently with each other.
Jackson pleaded guilty last month to two felony counts of first-degree robbery, felony first-degree assault, felony second-degree assault and felony attempted first-degree rape. The Dothan Eagle has not identified the victim who testified at the hearing because there was a sexual assault charge involved in the case, and the Eagle does not reveal the identity of the sexual assault victims.
The victim of the robbery and assaults asked the court to give Jackson a medium prison sentence, but no specific time length was suggested.
During cross examination by attorney T.J. Haywood, who represented Jackson, the victim said the incident happened after she and her friend approached Jackson to purchase narcotics.
Dothan police released information after Jackson's arrest in November 2009, that the allegations included his stabbing a woman in the abdomen and cutting her on the neck during an attempted rape. Police also charged Jackson with stabbing a second woman in the thigh. Police said the women did not suffer life-threatening injuries and drove themselves to a hospital. Police said the assaults happened in the 500 block of Morgan Street.
