Wiregrass residents looking for ways to gain employment may be flocking to the Dothan Civic Center in August.
The City of Dothan, Houston County and the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce officially announced the Second Annual Economic Summit on Jobs, which takes place Aug. 31 at the civic center.
Divided into seven categories, the summit is about fostering economic growth by teaching residents the tools needed to seek and create employment opportunities.
“We all have said over and over that jobs are the top priority for our government, the city government and our community, and that continues to be the case,” said Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver. “This summit is to talk about jobs, talk about how we can create opportunities for our citizens. Last year’s summit was a great success, had a great turnout, and a lot of good things came out of that summit. We expect it to grow this year. We encourage (residents) to come and be part of the activity or serve on one of the committees.”
The summit’s website, www.economicsummitonjobs.com, provides registration forms for the event.
Mackroyce Corbitt Jr., who owns Computer Printing Etc. in Dothan and chairs the entrepreneurship committee at the summit, said the event is helpful to anyone looking to gain employment.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to get involved in the day-to-day to help other people,” Corbitt said. “I advise everybody, if they have the opportunity, to come out and participate.”
Corbitt also attended last year’s summit.
“We saw, as entrepreneurs in the community, an opportunity to go out in the community and educate people who want to start a business as well as those who have a pre-existing business,” he said. “If you have a business and it grows, you can go out and employ people from our community. We educated them on various things such as financial options and business licensing. We also had information given out dealing with things they need to know about the different types of businesses, such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, etc.”
