Letter: Support DUI bill

»  Comments | Post a Comment

On July 20, 2007, my son, a Montgomery police officer, left work late at night headed home. Twenty-two minutes later, he was dead — killed by a drunk driver.

People tell me that it gets easier with time, but it doesn’t. Not a day goes by that his dad and I don’t speak his name or shed a tear for him. We now donate our time making people aware of the effects of drunk driving.

In our Legislature, there is a bill that would require repeat DUI offenders to use a device that tests their blood alcohol content. If it’s above 0.02 percent, it will prevent them from starting their car. Alabama is the only state in the country without a law like this. Please call or write your state senator, urging them to act on House Bill 361 before the end of the session.

Let's pass this much-needed law to protect innocent people from those whose judgment and regard for others are impaired.
