Humans aren’t the only ones who have been affected by last week’s devastating tornadoes.
Man’s best friends lost their homes too.
Greater Birmingham Humane Society and the Birmingham Jefferson County Animal Control have partnered up this week to reunite people with their pets.
“There’s nothing like having a pet owner that thought their pet was lost forever find their pet and just lose it in happiness,” BJC Animal Control’s Phil Doster said. “Obviously crying is OK if it’s a happy event. So we’re excited for them and we cry a little bit with them too.”
Doster said animal control has found more than 40 pets in the aftermath of April 27’s storms. So far eight have been reunited with their owners.
If you have lost or found a pet, you can call their hotline at 205-397-8534 or go to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s website at www.gbhs.org.
The hotline is staffed by humane society volunteers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Animal control will hold onto the pets as long as possible, Doster said, to give owners plenty of time to find their animals. He said the normal holding regulations won’t apply to those pets who have come into the shelter because of the tornados.
Birmingham’s humane society is working with animal control by collecting donations of food, money and supplies.
People can donate by going to the humane society’s website, www.gbhs.org, or by brining in food and supplies.
GBHS asks that those interested in donating food or supplies go to the website first to see what is needed.
