Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver’s Christmas present came in early February.
Culver beamed at the most recent Houston County sales tax collection report, which showed the county brought in more sales tax revenue in December than any single month in the history of Houston County.
The county collected $1.883 million in sales tax revenue in December of 2011. The number includes $1.736 in regular collections as well as $146,454 additional revenue from audit fees, which are typically included in the county’s sales tax revenue monthly report.
Culver said the December numbers — even without the audit revenue — are an all-time high for the county. The previous high occurred in the pre-recession economic boom of 2007 when the county collected $1.718 million in December.
The numbers do not reflect sales tax collected for the City of Dothan. Those numbers for December have not been released.
Culver said the numbers reflect consumer confidence in the Wiregrass economy.
“If people aren’t confident in the economy, then they aren’t going to spend money,” Culver said.
The numbers also reflect a trend for Houston County. Since the beginning of the 2012 fiscal year, revenues are up 3.1 percent for the county.
The strong rebound does not appear to be widespread. The Montgomery Advertiser reported Friday that sales tax numbers for the city and county were flat when compared to the same time period last year.
