Opelika awards contract for red light cameras

»  Comments | Post a Comment

OPELIKA — The city council in Opelika has awarded a contract to Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions to install and maintain the city's red-light camera project.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports the contract is for three years, with an automatic extension for two consecutive one-year terms.

The city has been pursuing an automated traffic light enforcement system for more than a year, and the council approved an ordinance in August 2011 enabling the city to move forward with it. The cameras nab motorists who run red lights.

City Administrator John Seymour said he was unsure when the camera system would be implemented, but the city's ordinance calls for a public announcement and awareness campaign no less than 30 days before implementation.
