Editorial: Don't give them any ideas

»  Comments | Post a Comment

We imagine that there may be someone among those Alabama lawmakers who passed the nation’s toughest immigration law last year who wishes he or she had come up with one Mississippi legislator’s brainstorm: The Gulf of America.

Mississippi Rep. Rep. Steve Holland, a Democrat from Plantersville (near Tupelo), proposed legislation to require that the body of water commonly known as the Gulf of Mexico be referred to within the state of Mississippi as “the Gulf of America.”

Holland is being facetious, and his outrageous suggestion was meant to ridicule efforts by his colleagues to pass an immigration bill he believes is mean-spirited.

We hope no one on Goat Hill latches on to that idea.
