Faced with daunting challenges, such as a budget deficit of 25 to 30 percent, Alabama lawmakers hit the ground running in their first week.

The first bill passed changes the name of the Alabama Development Office to the Department of Commerce.

The new name is in line with what other states call their job recruitment agencies, said Rep. Alan Baker, R-Brewton, the bill’s sponsor. It’ll help bring in foreign jobs, he adds.

The new name seems even farther afield from the department’s mission that the previous name.

How about “Department of Job Recruitment?”
