Many Wiregrass residents were caught off guard by freezing temperatures this weekend.
After all, it’s been an uncharacteristically warm winter so far, and we’re nearly midway through February.
Temperatures dropped to the mid-20s Sunday night, but National Weather Service meteorologist Ken Gould said the cold snap will taper off starting Monday.
“(Sunday) is the last cold night of this stretch,” he said. “We’re still a little on the cool side (Monday) with highs in the mid-50s, but the low Tuesday morning should be the upper 30s or lower 40s. Highs will be in the lower-to-mid-70s by Wednesday and Thursday.”
That doesn’t mean winter is over, though.
“History dictates we probably get another one or two freezes in there,” Gould said.
Residents should always be aware of upcoming weather conditions.
“We don’t issue regular freeze warnings, but we always caution people,” Gould said. “You never want to get lulled into a false sense of security just because you’ve had a warm winter so far. You don’t want to plant your crops early or anything, because there could always be another freeze.”
