Dothan police have charged a man with using a pistol to assault another man on the head during an attempted robbery at local trailer park on Monday.
According to a Dothan police statement, officers arrested Carlenilus Sandifer, 21, of Kristie Road, and charged him with felony second-degree assault.
The statement said the charge stemmed from a police response to a report of a critical firearm assault in the 3500 block of Napier Field Road on Monday afternoon.
Court records say the felony assault charge included demanding money from the victim. When he refused, Sandifer allegedly pulled a pistol from his pocket and fired a round at the victim’s feet. Within the same assault charge, Sandifer allegedly used the pistol to strike the victim on the back of the head.
The police statement said the investigation revealed two men were involved in an altercation, during which one gunshot was fired. Witnesses saw the victim bleeding from the head after the altercation, which led them to initially believe he’d been shot.
Police later learned the victim was cut on the head after being struck with a gun.
Police investigators arrested Sandifer less than an hour after the incident happened.
Sandifer was taken to the Houston County Jail and held on $15,000 bail. If convicted of the class C felony, second-degree assault, Sandifer faces one to 10 years in prison.
