Theodore (Ted) Long, a small business owner active on boards and in civic organizations, has been appointed to the Houston County Health Care Authority.
Long will fill the unexpired term of William H. Glover, who died last fall. The term runs through September 2017.
“I’m quite honored,” Long said Wednesday. “I think it’s a very important position, a great responsibility.”
The 13 members of the board are appointed by the Houston County Commission and provide governance for Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
Long is joining the board as it considers issues involving the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine, which held its groundbreaking in January. The initial class of 150 students at the four-year college affiliated with SAMC will start coursework in August 2013.
With the college coming, Long said a lot of decisions have to be made and actions taken. The board meets the last Tuesday of the month with called meetings in between, he said.
Long, 71, grew up in Ashford, lived in New York for 17 years and moved to Dothan in 1975.
According to information provided by SAMC, Long is the owner of Loncar’s Inc., a hair care and massage therapy business in Dothan. He has more than 40 years in the profession and is the author of “Hair Styles for the Black Woman.” He also produced, directed and co-wrote an educational video on massage therapy and chiropractic entitled “Embracing.”
His expertise in contemporary and period hair design is sought out by television and motion picture insiders, according to SAMC. He has worked on more than two dozen projects, including the 1995 movie “Waiting to Exhale,” starring the late Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett and directed by Forest Whitaker. The movie won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture.
He has worked with acclaimed director, producer and screenwriter John Singleton on “Hustle and Flow” and “Rosewood” and actor/director Mario Van Peebles on “Black Panthers” and “Posse.” He worked on the television movie “The Rosa Parks Story,” the HBO film “Boycott,” the made-for-TV movie “Selma, Lord, Selma,” and many more. He also worked on the TODAY Show with Barbara Walters and Hugh Downs.
Long lives in Dothan with his wife, Mary Louise. He is a longtime member of the American Massage Therapy Association, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 798, the Wiregrass Optimist Club, the Dothan City Board of Zoning Adjustment and the Citizens Supervisory Committee. He is a former member of the Dothan City Recreation Board.
