Let the people decide
I have watched and listened to and read about all the bingo vote-buying stuff more than long enough. I was under the impression that the public elects our senators and other government representatives to go to our capitals and represent us, not to go there and vote on and pass only things that will benefit them and theirs. So what if folks in any area of Alabama are totally against legalizing gambling in Alabama? There are, by the same token, folks in other areas that are for it. This is where our representatives come in; this is where they should put it out for a vote by the people of the state of Alabama.
Do not decide for us and do not let someone’s money decide for us. Let us decide. If more vote against it, so be it. If more vote for it, then it will become legal in Alabama. That’s how it should work. Let the people decide.
As for as the trial and vote buying, that is exactly the same thing lobbyists do for a living in Washington. They just manage to get away with it there because there’s enough money involved to make it more worthwhile to do another’s bidding.
For any of the people involved in the bingo trial wishing to do the right thing, all they need to do is just let the people decide. If they are so sure they know what we want, why won’t they put it to the test? Save the people of Alabama millions of dollars with this craziness and just let the people decide.
I went online and checked the two closest states to us with lotteries, Georgia and Florida. I compared the different types of crime and crime rates for them before and after they started lotteries. Guess what? There was no increase. I then compared both states statistics with those same things for the same periods for Alabama. Once again, no difference. All three states had virtually the same crime rates even though Alabama had no lottery or gambling and both Georgia and Florida had both. This information was easy to find and compile. Anyone can do it.
