A Dothan woman faces 10 years to life in prison for the attempted murder of a man who prosecutors say was run over by a vehicle and dragged 140 feet.
Assistant Houston County District Attorney Banks Smith said a jury found Lakreisha Ann Berry, 28, of East Adams Street, guilty of attempted murder and felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
Circuit Court Judge Kevin Moulton will sentence Berry next month. She faces the 10 years to life sentence for the attempted murder, and one to 10 years in prison for the second charge. Smith said Berry was allowed to remain free on the $100,000 bail she’d already posted.
Dothan police arrested Berry in April 2011, for what Smith referred to as a domestic-motivated incident. The incident happened around 12 a.m. near the intersection of Newton and Range streets.
“She actually struck him on Newton Street and dragged him almost 140 feet,” Smith said. “It’s a miracle he lived. He is badly crippled from this attempted murder. He has little or no use of his left arm and limited use of his right arm.”
Smith said the victim and Berry referred to each other as husband and wife, and lived together at the time of the incident, but he’s not sure if they were actually married. Smith said the victim did not split up with Berry afterward.
Smith said the victim also did not testify during the trial. Smith said the victim was brought in to testify, but then left the courthouse before it was his turn to take the stand. He said most of the time it’s more challenging to prosecute without the victim of a crime.
“Investigators Robert Cole, John Crawford and crime scene technician Jon Thomas did such a good job investigating that we were able to try it without the victim,” Smith said. “The state was able to meet the essential elements of the crime.”
